Control of rabies Routine vaccination: keeping rabies under control. Rabies is a horrible and deadly disease. Once signs of it appear in an animal or human, death usually occurs within 10 days. Fortunately, rabies is also a disease that can be completely prevented. In developed countries, vaccination programs have been highly successful in preventing rabies in dogs. Vaccinating a large proportion of the dog population over a period of several years reduces the rate of disease transmission among dogs. As a result, the incidence of human rabies also drops substantially. Vaccinations are nearly 100% effective in preventing rabies in dogs and in people. They are also highly successful in curing rabies in people who are suspected of having been exposed to rabies virus. |
